Direct-care workers often have incomes so low that they qualify for publicly financed health coverage. In addition, many states have expanded Medicaid or other state-financed insurance programs to cover low-wage workers and their families, or members of certain occupational groups.
Examples
- Massachusett’s plan for universal coverage
- New York’s Family Health Plus
- Rhode Island’s RiteCare (pdf) program, which encourages stability in the child care provider workforce by making family child care providers eligible for the same health benefits offered by Medicaid.
- Vermont’s public health insurance plan
