Collective Bargaining

Many direct-care workers have secured affordable health insurance coverage through collective bargaining. The Service Employees International Union alone represents 700,000 workers in nursing homes and home care. and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Union represents tens of thousands.

Examples

  • The HealthyWorkers plan for San Francisco’s In-Home Support Service providers, Medicaid-funded home care workers who are hired and supervised directly by consumers.
  • The plan covering Medicaid-funded consumer-directed home care workers in Washington State (pdf).
