Tell Your Congressional Representatives: Don’t Cut Medicaid!

Summer is heating up and so is the political landscape in Washington. Congress is debating how to balance the budget — and they need to hear from you. Don’t let Congress get away with cutting health care for seniors and our most vulnerable families.

Now is the time to weigh in with your members of Congress. Tell them: DON’T CUT MEDICAID. Cuts to this vital program will only shift costs to states and transfer the burden to seniors who depend on the program for long-term care, people with disabilities, children and their families.

Call your representative and senators today at 1-866-922-4970. Let them know that Medicaid matters (pdf), and urge them to reject Medicaid cuts, in any form. They should oppose any proposals that include:

  • deep spending cuts,
  • harsh caps on spending,
  • or proposals that would restructure Medicaid.

Reducing the deficit is important, but the approach must be fair. We should not balance the budget on the backs of our most poor and vulnerable families — those who can least afford to bear it.

Join others this Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday (June 14-16) and make your opinion known!

  • Unfortunately, we have already seen what the Obama National Healthcare Plan has done to Medicare and Medicaid cuts in LTC. This summer, we have seen extreme efforts to cut our nursing home spending in response to the first round of funding cuts by CMS…the quality of residents’ food has seriously declined..the CNA hours were cut from the 2.9 we used to the minimum of 2.5..supplies have been reduced and nurses are picking up the slack for what the CNAs do not have time to do (answer call lights, toilet residents, feed residents, etc) while still trying to accomplish our nursing tasks in the mandated time allotted.
Moreover, our staffing ratio includes CNA hours for CNAs who are not performing DPC…we include the staffing coordinator who does no direct care, a CNA unit clerk who does not provide any DPC…a CNA who is the central supply person and does not perform any DPC..
that’s fraudulent but it is common practice all over the US
We need to change the federally mandated staffing ratios…that is the core of the issue…nursing homes will always provide the minimum to protect their bottom line…CMS must RAISE THE MINIMUM staffing ratios——-that is the only way nursing homes will comply to some degree.

  • I’d like to learn more about the Medicaid/Medicare cuts as well as the “HealthCare Reform.”

  • Your right, they shouldn’t cut the medicaid. many people will benefit on it. Thank you so much for sharing us this very informative article. I do agree and I’m on your side.
