chart of injuries
Nursing aides, orderlies, and attendants have the highest rate of injuries requiring days away from work in the nation.

They are over 400% more likely to experience an injury than the average worker in the United States.

Sprains, Strains, & Bruises

Nursing aides, orderlies, and attendants are 800% more likely than a roofer to suffer a back injury and 280% more likely than a sheet metal worker to be bruised.

Think about it. A typical nursing home resident might weigh between 150 and 200 pounds. Nursing aides undergo intense physical demands as they assist these people in and out of bed, in and out of chairs, and to the bathroom and shower.

Muskuloskelatal Disorders (MSDs)

The three occupations with the highest number of MSDs in 2006 were laborers
and freight, stock, and material movers; nursing aides, orderlies, and attendants; and heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers. Nursing aides, orderlies, and attendants reported the highest rate—293 per 10,000 workers.

Days Away From Work

Nursing aides, orderlies, and attendants had 49,480 days away from work due to occupational injuries and illnesses. With the care gap widening, we need as many of these workers on the job as possible.
